First thanks to all that make this amazing thing possible. I mostly just take from this site. Somebody is doing alot of giving. I encourage all to donate.
Now that I've gotten the guilt off my chest...
I've been updating my list and am having the same trouble I always have when I come to compilations. This one happens to be John Lennon, but I had the same problem with a Janis one earlier. These are often multi-year collections. I doubt that I'm the first that has asked this (I did browse the wiki), but is there some convention that could be adopted for these, either first year to appear, last year to appear or an actual "year" called "compilations"? I guessing that there's a simple no to this and a good reason why, otherwise Tom, Diana and the crew would have dealt with this ease of use the same as they've dealt with all the others, making this the most amazing music database on the planet. |

Compilations are a pain in the ass. Different people do them differently, and it's sometimes not clear what year to use, or even what year the material comes from.
The convention is to use ??/??/39 and 1939 for "unknown" unless the compilation is primarily from a particular year. For example, a bootleg from 1985 with a couple of bonus tracks from another year should be filed under ??/??/85 and 1985. But, if it's a few songs from each year, or there is no date at all, then it should go into 1939, with a descriptive title like "Early 70s compilation"
We move a lot of compilations to 1939, but there are more than we can keep up with. Feel free to suggest changes to put compilations there -- they go into a queue for review, but we clear that out pretty frequently.
